The Department of Theriogenology was established in 2020.The word “theriogenology” was created by combining therio (beast, animal), gen/genesis (beginning, birth, reproduction), and ology (study of). Theriogenology is the branch of veterinary medicine that focuses on reproduction, including the physiology and pathology of male and female reproductive systems in animals and the clinical practice of veterinary obstetrics, and gynecology.
Objectives
We offer a variety of services that involves reproduction in the companion animal (dog or cat), as well as large animals, including breeding management in the female to semen collection and evaluation in the male. Other services offered include semen analysis, pregnancy diagnoses and management and artificial insemination. We also offer emergency services for difficult deliveries. Routinely we do breeding soundness evaluations of male and female, management of diseases or complications of the postpartum period, and medical or surgical management of diseases of the male and female reproductive tract.
Research
Research in the Reproduction Program is concentrated in three areas:
- Assisted reproductive techniques
- Estrus synchronization, pharmacological manipulation of estrous cycles
- Investigating infertility in large and small animal
- Ultrasonography
